We’d usually have been on the beach with a barbecue, or enjoying a long lazy lunch at one of our favourite restaurants on May Bank Holiday. But since that wasn’t possible, we used the long weekend as an excuse to check out some of the mouth-watering ‘in home’ dining offers from restaurants.
And it seems the rest of the nation was doing the same.
Searches for food delivery are up 113% year on year, and while searches of takeaway spiked between 22 and 28 March there’s been some interesting trends emerging since[1].
Unsurprisingly, ‘Chinese’ – the nation’s favourite takeaway – has still been the most searched over the last week. But more and more people have been searching for pubs offering takeaway and, likely driven by VE Day, operators offering at home afternoon tea.
We’re loving the ‘in restaurant feel’ some operators are trying to recreate as take home. While they won’t quite satisfy our craving for a rowdy restaurant table full of family and friends [that will need to wait]… here are some of our faves:
The Instagram star…Pizza Pilgrims
What’s not to love about the Frying Pan Pizza Kit?!? Essentially, pizzas in the post. The box contains everything you need to recreate the Pizza Pilgrim’s experience (apart from the frying pan): 00 flour, x2 dough balls, tomato sauce, Parmesan, Mozzarella and a basil leaf. We’ve been hankering after the postie to drop one off ever since Clerkenwell Boy shared it on his Instagram.

The burger… Patty & Bun
We’re lusting over the lockdown DIY patty kit from Patty & Bun. The cult burger joint has launched a lockdown kit available in either meat (with its signature patties) or vegan (complete with This Isn’t Bacon). The kits contain: four patties, brioche buns, a squeezy bottle of smoky mayo, cheese slices and homemade pickled and smoky onions. Sadly, delivery is inside the M25 only – for now.

The niche one… Le Swine
For the makers of ‘the best bacon butty’ comes the bacon butty kit – bringing home the bacon through lockdown. Kits for two start from £12 and include old fashioned middle bacon, Clarence Court duck eggs, bacon butter, Le Swine’s signature milk and onion buns, fresh sage, and its homemade ketchup. What’s more, you’ll also get a voucher for a free bacon butty when the shop opens back up.
The regional one… Wild Flor, Brighton
New-ish kid on the block Wild Flor created a splash when it opened just over a year ago. And their ‘Wild Flor to your door’ has been selling out in minutes. There’s a ‘finish at home’ meat and veggie menu – currently centring on a deluxe pie – and a top list of matched wines available from the cellar. Be quick with those orders.
